FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – A North Carolina man was arrested on I-69 near the Pokagon State Park exit in Steuben County Thursday morning when he allegedly got into a confrontation with police officers.
Indiana State Police say authorities initially got a report of a man beating a woman in the median of the Indiana Toll Road in the western part of Steuben County. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Tirrell D. Rogers, had left the scene traveling east and was spotted exiting the Toll Road to southbound I-69.
The vehicle was eventually stopped and a trooper noticed that both the driver and the front seat female passenger had signs of injury. He also discovered that a young child was restrained in the back seat.
State Police say Rogers told a state trooper that he had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend over her cell phone but he wouldn’t answer questions about his injured arm.
Rogers refused to be handcuffed and walked away into traffic on I-69. Police say Rogers told them to shoot him as he continued to walk down the interstate holding his hands above his head ignoring police commands.
He was finally subdued and handcuffed after a Steuben County Deputy successfully used his Taser to bring Rogers to the ground. Two previous attempts to Taser him were unsuccessful. Rogers refused medical treatment at the scene.
He was taken to the Steuben County Jail where he was booked on multiple charges including strangulation, domestic battery in the presence of a child, intimidation, criminal mischief, obstructing traffic, and resisting law enforcement.
