ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) — Two juveniles who escaped from an Iowa detention facility were captured in Steuben County on Tuesday afternoon. The teens, ages 14 and 17, were captured following a short vehicle pursuit and a search of a wooded area involving police from throughout Steuben County.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says the youngsters stole a van from a home on Snow Lake. A Fremont Deputy Marshal spotted it near State Roads 127 and 120 and tried to stop it.The suspects fled into a hotel parking lot and crashed the van into a parked vehicle.They then ran north into a wooded area. A K9 Officer from Angola led officers to the suspects as they headed towards the Indiana Toll Road.
The juveniles were then apprehended without further incident. No injuries were reported.
Circumstances surrounding the juveniles’ escape from Iowa are unknown. The Sheriff’s Department says escapees are from Baltimore and were trying to return there. The juveniles were transported to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office where the Probation Department took over the placement of the juveniles.
The case remains under investigation and reports will be turned over to Probation and the Steuben County Prosecuting Attorney to determine local charges.
