COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Friday’s 3½ inch rainfall near the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities wastewater treatment plant led to an overflow which resulted in partially treated sewage being discharged into the Sauk River for just over two hours.
The BPU says the incident started at 10:00am and lasted until 12:10pm.
They have notified officials with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.
Samples of the water have been collected along the river and down river from the point of discharge. The results from the initial samples will be obtained on Monday and reported to the CHA.
Officials say there is a possibility that the fecal coliform counts maybe elevated for the next few days.
It is being recommended that you should avoid full body contact with the water in the Sauk River between the treatment plant and the Rotary Park public access during this time.
