DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – J.D. Martinez’s pinch-hit solo homer in the eighth gave the red-hot Detroit Tigers a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. It was Martinez’s first game off the disabled list.
Nick Castellanos smacked an RBI double in the fourth to help Detroit extend its win streak to eight games. Shane Greene earned his second win. Francisco Rodriguez nailed down his 30th save.
Justin Morneau launched a solo shot in the seventh for Chicago, which has dropped three straight and six of seven. Chris Sale struck out 10, but dropped to 14-and-5 with the complete-game loss.
In this afternoon’s series finale, Jordan Zimmermann returns from the disabled list to make the start for the Tigers and the White Sox send Jose Quintana to the mound.
The Tigers are now just two games back of the floundering Cleveland Indians for first place in the American League Central. Cleveland got blown out again by the lowly Minnesota Twins 13-5 last night. The Cleveland pitching staff has been shelled for 35 runs in the last three games.
