BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The high school volleyball season began Saturday for Coldwater, as the Lady Cardinals went 5-1 and finished runner-up to Buchanan in the Gold Division of Saturday’s Carrie Adams Memorial Tournament.

The Coldwater J.V. Volleyball team went 10-2 and won the Comstock Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Emily Smoker had 34 kills, 30 digs and 23 assists. Anna Tappenden had 20 kills, 26 digs and 30 assists, Jordan Clemens had 23 kills, 38 digs and four blocks while Carlee Crabtree had 24 kills, 20 digs and three blocks.
Union City won the Bronze division of the Carrie Adams Memorial Tournament on Saturday. The Chargers went 2-2-1 for the day.

Niles swept the Bronson Volleyball Tournament on Saturday as they went 6-0. They beat Bronson twice to capture the championship after winning the Gull Lake Tournament Championship on Friday. Niles defeated Bronson 25-14, 25-20 during the round robin and then defeated the Vikings in the championship match 25-19, 25-21.
—BOYS SOCCER—
The Coldwater boys varsity soccer team began its season with a pair of wins Saturday at the Justin Bailey Memorial Invitational in Portage, beating Plainwell 2-0 and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 1-0. Mana Ahmed had both goals in the opener, with one assisted by Jon Brownell. In the second game, which was cut short by a thunderstorm, Mohamed Nagi scored, also assisted by Brownell. Balal Nasser had 2 saves in goal against Plainwell, with none needed against Loy Norrix.
The Coldwater JV team beat Plainwell 1-0 and Loy Norrix 5-0. Both teams will host Kalamazoo Central for their home openers Tuesday.
—BOYS TENNIS—The Coldwater boys tennis team played in the Vicksburg Invitational on Friday. The event was cancelled due to rain but the Cardinals were able to get some matches in:
#1 singles: Kameron Miller (CW) was beating Ryan Rogers (Edwardsburg) 6-0, 5-2 when the rain came#2 singles: Shane O’Grady (CW) was beating Rayan Nehme (Vicksburg) 6-1, 5-1 when the rain came#3 singles: Austin Butler (CW) defeated Matt Davis (Harper Creek) 6-0, 6-1#4 singles: Porter Skidmore (CW) won his opening match on a default. He did not get to play anyone all day.#1 doubles: Mitchell Duda/Christian Pine (CW) defeated Spencer Brown/Barat Goel (Portage Norther) 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 (the 3rd set was a supertiebreaker that Duda & Pine won 10 points to 8)#2 doubles: Sam Morrison/Noah Waterbury (CW) were defeated by Nate Allwine and Ryan Baker (Mattawan) 6-4, 6-3#3 doubles: Kyle Krzyzanski/Alec Keplinger (CW) were defeated by Isaac Hawkins/Cam Blakemore (Parma Western) 6-2, 6-4#4 doubles: Blake Yates/Jake Matevia (CW) defeated Caleb Langlinais/Nate Rogers (Vicksburg) 6-0, 6-1#4 doubles: Blake Yates/Jake Matevia (CW) were beating Christopher Rau/Kent Busniewski (Harper Creek) 6-1, 1-0 when the rain started.
At the time the event was cancelled, Parma Western was in first place having only lost one match. Coldwater was in second place with only two lost matches.
