COLDWATER. MI (WTVB) – One of two suspects charged in the March 29th robbery of the Century Bank and Trust branch in Quincy had a request to lower his $1 million bond denied on Tuesday morning during a probable cause hearing in Branch County District Court.
32-year-old John Thomas Morgan has entered not guilty pleas to three counts of bank robbery, three counts of unarmed robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit bank robbery.
He was seeking the bond reduction is order to move from maximum security to medium security at the Branch County Jail. But Judge Brent Weigle denied the request saying the defendant was a substantial risk to not appear in court and that he wanted to protect the public.
Morgan and co-defendant Nikole Collins were arrested March 14, 2016 in Williams County, Ohio, hours after the Michigan State Police issued a news release saying they were wanted on outstanding warrants for possession of heroin and marijuana as well as for maintaining a drug house. After they were brought back to St. Joseph County, they were released after posting ten percent of a $10,000 bond. The robbery in Quincy took place after they had posted bond in the St. Joseph County case.
Collins is also facing bank robbery and conspiracy to commit bank robbery charges in Branch County. Her probable cause was also scheduled for Tuesday. Her bond is $500,000. Preliminary exams for the two defendants are scheduled for next Tuesday.
