JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – With the Labor Day holiday over, now comes the time to close up vacation homes for the winter and Consumers Energy is offering some tips so that these homes can be safely maintained during the off season.
Shut off the water supply and then drain pipes, hot water tanks and sewer traps to avoid pipe freezing. Give the fireplace or woodstove a thorough cleaning and close the damper flue. Store outside décor in a secure location Clean the kitchen and remove any food.
Consider making arrangements to have your driveway cleared of snow and ice at least once a winter in case emergency access is needed.
Unplug all electrical appliances and electronic devices
Install audible smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to protect against fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
