GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – There was no recount for the Girard Township Supervisors office Wednesday afternoon after it was discovered the seal numbers on the bottom of the two ballot containers were not recorded properly as required by state law.
Thus the results of August 2nd remain the same as Township Supervisor Gene Easterday wins the GOP Primary by one vote over Phillip AcMoody 198-197.
Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak says it’s one of the check and balance procedures that must be followed before the Board of Canvassers can start a recount.
The bizarre turn of events was caused by an error by poll workers.
Kubasiak said the ballot containers used in Girard Township required two state seals on each of them since there were doors on the top and bottom.
Basically, the recount could not take place because there was no way to verify two of the state seal numbers that were not recorded.
Since there was no Democratic opposition, Easterday was essentially re-elected for another term.
