BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – In Friday night high school sports, in a game we had on the radio, the Coldwater Cardinals bounced back from last week’s loss to Marshall with a 17-6 Interstate 8 Conference victory at Battle Creek Pennfield. Coldwater had a big edge in total yards 322-85 as they improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Coldwater scored on their opening possession as Joey Severn scored from five yards out. A Cameron Barnes 29 yard field goal in the second quarter gave Coldwater a 10-0 halftime lead. Pennfield scored early in the fourth quarter but missed the extra point which cut the Cardinal lead to 10-6 but Sam DeMeester scored from 31 yards out with 6:56 left to seal the deal. Our McDonald’s Players of the Game were, collectively, Coldwater’s defensive unit, who held Pennfield to just 85 yards of total offense. Severn rushed for 128 yards while DeMeester had 108 yards. Coldwater ran 57 offensive plays, all but one play was on the ground.

The Quincy Orioles improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8 Conference as they won at Athens 38-0. The Orioles broke the game open with a 24 point second quarter. Ryan Gibson rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns. John Purvis and Nathan Karney scored the other Quincy TD’s as the Orioles compiled 420 yards of total offense. The Quincy defense held Athens to 49 yards of total offense and forced four fumbles.

The Union City Chargers suffered their first loss of the season as they dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 8. Springport snapped a 14-14 tie with 27 unanswered points as the Spartans improved to 3-0. Elijah Harris scored twice for the Chargers while Blade Gordon had the other Charger TD.

Dilan Rissman scored all three touchdowns for the Vikings in the second half after Parchment built a 28-0 lead. The Vikings drop to 0-3 for the season.

Coldwater finished ninth out of 17 teams on Friday at the Redhawk Invitational hosted by the Marshall Country Club. The Cardinals had a team score of 403. St. Joe won the event with a score of 341. Coldwater was led by Claire Sheppard who shot a 91. Molly Smith, Hunter Jenkot, and Gabriel Boston each had 104’s and Jayla Goodwin rounded out the scoring with a round of 105.
