JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – Consumer Energy is warning customers once again of a scam in which someone will call you and demand that you pay your utility bill quickly with a prepaid credit card or else your service will be shut off immediately.
Through last Thursday, Consumers had gotten about a thousand potential scam complaints up from 860 during September 2015.
A total of 46 payments were made totaling more than $58,000.
Although Genesee and Saginaw Counties have been heavily targeted, the scams move from city to city.
Consumers says they never demand payment using only a prepaid credit card.
They urge customers to never pay an energy bill over the phone using a Green Dot card or other pre-paid credit cards.
Don’t give out personal information or money to anyone you do not know over the phone.
