STURGIS, MI (WTVB) -Mana Ahmed scored a hat trick as Coldwater varsity soccer team recorded its 4th straight shutout, beating Sturgis 4-0 Saturday. Ahmed’s first goal came just 17 seconds into the game, as he stripped a defender of the ball and fired it home. Mohamed Nagi scored the other Coldwater first half goal, assisted by Ahmed Saied on a long direct kick.
Ahmed’s second half goals were assisted by Mohamed Saleh and Shuaib Aljabaly. Balal Nasser made 10 saves in goal for his 7th shutout of the season.
With the non-conference win, the Cardinals best ever start improves to 9-1-1 on the season. They return to Interstate 8 Conference action Monday night at Parma Western.
The Coldwater JV team stayed undefeated on the season with a 4-1 win at Sturgis Saturday. Shaif Ahmed had two goals. Cade Lawrence and Jason Martinez‐ Robles also scored for Coldwater. Goal keeper Alex Schaale had three saves while Ahmed Salem had one save.
—BOYS TENNIS—
Coldwater finished 2nd in the Allegan Invitational on Saturday. Eighth ranked Allegan won the meet with 20 points followed by Coldwater with 17 points and Jenison with 15 points.
Porter Skidmore suffered his first loss of the year at number four singles against Kody Harrington who was a state semi-finalist last year at the same flight. Austin Butler continued his undefeated season by easily winning both of his matches at number three singles. Shane O’Grady won the championship at number two singles defeating Brandon Day of Allegan in a super tiebreaker to win the championship. Coldwater’s number two doubles team of Noah Waterbury and Sam Morrison scored a pair of straight set wins to win the championship of their flight.
—GIRLS SWIMMING—
Coldwater finished third at the Bearcat Invitational in Battle Creek on Saturday. It was the best showing at an invitational the Lady Cards have ever had. Jayda Kelly, Kory Ulrich, Heather Neitzka, and Emma Moore all brought home medals winning an event in their bracket. Kory Ulrich broke two team records in the 200 and 500 Freestyle. Jayda Kelly broke the team record in the 100 Backstroke. The relay team of Kinzie Groves, Jayda Kelly, Erica Rodgers and Kory Ulrich broke the team record in the 200 Freestyle relay.
The Lady Cardinals swim again next Saturday at the Sturgis Relays starting at 10:00am.
—CROSS COUNTRY—
Quincy and Union City competed at the Mendon Invitational on Saturday where no team scores were kept. Medals went to the top 30 finishers. Quincy’s Nathan Nohr finished third with a new personal record time of 17:21. Ian Trail finished 30th. Grant Gay was the top finisher for Union City as he was 13th. Chase Hurley was 27th.
Five Quincy girls earned medals led by Gabby Porter who was third. Meri Michael was ninth, Haley Bean was 15th, Madde Horn was 22nd and MaKenzie Blatter was 30th. Marika Endo was the top finisher for Union City as she was 26th.
—GIRLS VOLLEYBALL—
Coldwater finished seventh out of 21 teams at the Portage Northern Husky Tournament on Saturday. During pool play, the Cardinals split with Otsego 22-25, 25-18 and Niles 25-22, 11-25. In the power pool, Coldwater beat Unity Christian 25-19, 25-22 who was first in their pool and split with Vicksburg 21-25, 25-22. The Cardinals ended up taking first in their power pool and was placed into the gold bracket. They then lost to Stevensville-Lakeshore in the quarter finals 2-0 (17-25, 21-25). Coldwater’s record is now 17-4-5.
Tyler Scheid had 19 kills, 6 aces, and a team high of 9 blocks tied with Jasmine WelletJasmine Wellet also had 26 digs, and led the team in kills with 23. Jamie Wellet led in assists with 45, led in aces with 9, had 36 digs, and 17 kills
Darlene Horn had 26 digs, Isabella Foley had 23 digs, Olivia Foley and Carly Howell each had 16 assists, and Drue Mullin led the team in digs with 39 and 4 kills
Coldwater’s freshman volleyball finished third on Saturday in their invitational tournament. They lost to the eventual tournament champions from Centreville in the semi-finals.
Bailey Burkhardt had 33 kills, seven digs and eight aces, Taylor Wilber 13 kills, nine digs, six aces and 31 assists, Jasmine Coppess had 40 assists, nine aces, five digs and nine kills, Linzy Monks had 18 digs, six kills and three assists, Kaity Meyers had six kills, eight aces and seven digs and Alexa Davenport had 12 kills, five blocks, four digs and three aces.
