COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Community Schools Superintendent Terry Ann Boguth issued a second statement Tuesday in light of the controversy that has erupted after the mother of a seventh grader at Legg Middle School told a Kalamazoo television station her son was suspended after he told a school official he found a knife in his backpack.
Boguth said, “While we recognize that the recent information that has been shared with the public is raising concerns, our top priority is, and always will be, the safety, health and privacy of our students.”
She went on to say, “We cannot divulge details of any specific situation. However, it is important for families to know that any situation involving student discipline is taken very seriously. It is painstakingly investigated and decisions are made very carefully in accordance with district policies and state guidelines, while considering what is in the best interests of all of our students. We will continue to strive to provide the best possible educational setting for the students of the Coldwater Community Schools.”
Social media was filled with comments about the situation on Tuesday. While a few backed administrators, many others felt school officials did not use common sense.
The youngster was initially suspended 180 days but the suspension was later reduced to 30 days.
