COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys soccer Thursday, Coldwater closed out the the regular season on a winning note, beating Marshall 3-0 in the championship game of the Interstate 8 Conference Gold Division Tournament. The victory was the Cardinals 15th shutout of the season, improving their record to 18-2-1. Coldwater did not give up a goal in nine league games.
Mana Ahmed scored an unassisted goal 5 minutes into game. Jonathon Brownell then scored 3 minutes later, assisted by Ahmed, to give the Cardinals a 2-0 halftime lead. Brownell scored the final goal of the game 5 minutes into the 2nd half, assisted by Anas Asker. Balal Nasser made 5 saves in goal for Coldwater.
The Cardinals are off now until the semi final round of the district tournament hosted by Charlotte next Thursday, when they will face the winner of Tuesday’s first round game between Eaton Rapids and Marshall.

Coldwater 22, Hastings 16
Coldwater rallied from a 16-0 deficit. Griffin Olmstead ran for two touchdowns and threw a 35 TD pass to Gage McGuire for what turned out to be the winning score. Olmstead had 26 rushes for 132 yards and passed for 50 yards.
Quincy 58, Springport 0 (Caleb McCavit ran for two touchdowns and passed another for Quincy.)
—LARRY DOWNS—
Coldwater native Larry Downs will be inducted into the Albion College Hall of Fame Friday afternoon as part of Albion’s Homecoming weekend. Downs is one of ten new inductees into the Hall. He attended Albion between 1962 and 1966. Downs averaged nearly 18.5 points per game and earned all MIAA first team honors in 1965.
Downs was a four year starter for the Britons and captained the men’s basketball team for two seasons.
—MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL—
The 8th grade A volleyball team defeated Lumen Christi 25-7 25-12 on Thursday night. Abby Herman had a strong night with 12 points, 7 aces, 2 kills and one dig. Laynee Paarlberg had 8 points, 6 aces and 4 assists. Meg Smith recorded 7 points and 4 aces; Veronica Gonzalez had 4 points and 3 assists; Amber Sunderland had 3 points while Alyssa Bach and Jenna Julien both had 2 kills as all of the middle school teams hosted their pink game.
The teams will host the Coldwater Middle School Invitational on Saturday a 9:00 a.m.
The 8th grade B volleyball team defeated Jackson Catholic 25-20, 25-20. Alyssa Fisher had 7 points and 3 aces. Molly Lewis, Jocelyn Salto, and Annabelle Kling had 5 points each. The Cardinals next match is at home on October 18th against Harper Creek.
The Coldwater 7th grade A volleyball team defeated Lumen Christi 25-21, 25-21 as they improved to 13-1.
