KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – In boys tennis, Coldwater finished tied for 11th at the Division Three State Finals in Kalamazoo. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood edged Detroit Country Day for the state title.
Cameron Miller, Shane O’Grady and Austin Butler all lost in the second round while Porter Skidmore lost in the quarterfinals.
The doubles team of Christian Pine and Mitchell Duda along with Sam Morrison and Noah Waterbury lost in the second round while Alec Keplinger and Kyle Krzyzanski along with Jakob Matevia and Blake Yates lost in the first round.
—GIRLS GOLF—
Coldwater’s Claire Sheppard finished the second day of the MHSAA State Finals with a round of 102 on Saturday to end the tournament with a total score of 200 for the two day event held at the Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
—CROSS COUNTRY—
Both the Coldwater boys and girls cross country teams finished third on Saturday in their division at the annual Sturgis Invitational. Detroit Catholic Central easily won the boy’s competition; Sturgis was victorious in girl’s competition. Although the Cardinals narrowly failed to win a team trophy, Shuaib Aljabaly won individual honors in first place, and he was joined in the medal ceremony by Zack Murphy who was fourth, Jordan Parkinson who finished 13th and Jacob Fair who finished 15th.
The Lady Cards were represented in the medal ceremony by Kathy Potter with her bronze medal, and she was joined by Elka Machan who was fifth, Lexi Clemens who finished 10th and Josilyn Quimby who finished 30th.
Bronson’s boys and Quincy’s girls won the Division Three and Four races. Bronson had 25 points to win the boys meet while Quincy was second with 43. Quincy’s Nathan Nohr won the race. His teammates Brock Martin and Bryce Bassage finished ninth and tenth. Bronson had six runners finish in the top eight. Colin Ransbottom was third. He was followed by Marcus Broom, Blake Bucklin, Luis DePaz, Bryce Kosmerick and Hunter Trine.
Bronson’s Xochita Garcia won the girls race. She was followed by six Quincy runners. Meri Michael finished second. She was followed by teammates Harmony Harpster, Haley Bean, Madelyn Allman, Madde Horn and Makenzie Blatter.
—GIRLS SWIMMING—
The Coldwater Girls Swim and Dive Team had their last invitational of the season on Saturday. The invite was for individual swims rather than a team event.
Jayda Kelly led the way for the Cardinals finishing 2nd and breaking team records in the 100 Backstroke and 4th in the 50 Freestyle. Makinzie Groves finished 4th and set a team record in the 100 Freestyle. She was also 6th in the 100 Breaststroke. Kordelia Ulrich finished 6th in the 500 Freestyle and 7th in the 200 Freestyle and Kenydee Otto finished 12th in the 100 Backstroke.
The Medley and Freestyle relay teams for Coldwater finished 5th and 7th. The 200 Medley relay was comprised of Jayda Kelly, Makinzie Groves, Kordelia Ulrich, and Maddie Marsh and the Freestyle relay was swam by Jayda Kelly, Ella Budd, Makinzie Groves and Kordelia Ulrich. Emma Moore set the One Meter Dive record.
The Lady Cardinals swim again on October 26 at Charlotte.

Taylor Wilber had 30 assists, 14 digs and five kills, Bailey Burkhardt had 19 kills, five assists, 14 blocks and 10 digs, Jasmine Coppess had 12 assists, eight kills, eight assists and 11digs while Linzy Monks had 14 kills, 26 digs and three aces.

Leading the team was Laynee Paarlberg with 28 points 14 aces, 17 assists and 6 digs. Abby Herman 25 points 17 aces, 5 kills, 7 digs and one assist, Meg Smith 13 points 6 aces, 3 kills and 2 digs. The Coldwater 8th grade B volleyball team went 2-6 in the tournament. Joselyn Salto had a strong day with 15 points, five aces, six kills, two blocks, and five digs. Carly Gebbink chipped in 18 points, 3 aces, two kills, and two blocks.
The 8th grade teams host Harper Creek on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
The Coldwater 7th grade A volleyball is now 16-1-1 as they won the Coldwater Invitational on Saturday with wins over Jonesville 25-6 25-10 Parchment 25-17 25-13 Coldwater B team 25-16 25-9 and a split with Union City 25-17 22-25.
