COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch Intermediate School District Superintendent Joe Lopez told the BISD Board of Education Wednesday that they have not received final word yet from the Michigan Department of Education on a waiver that would allow the district to start classes earlier than other Michigan districts.
Lopez told the board it looks good be he indicated they are getting into a time crunch. He said they can’t wait until February or March because of all the calendar changes in the BISD and local school districts.
Lopez said in August that Coldwater, Quincy and Bronson school officials asked to have the BISD file for a three year waiver.
If approved, the earliest it would go into effect is the 2017-2018 school year. The districts are currently required to start classes on the Tuesday after Labor Day.
In other business, the board approved a three year contract with Tenurgy of Petosky, Michigan. The company will review and analyze the district’s past billings and monitor future billings for utility costs.
They also approved an agreement with Frontline Education for the on line employee application process.
In addition, the board voted to keep the $1,700 tuition rate the same for 2016-2017.
