FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – A Fremont man was taken into custody on Friday after the theft of a generator led to a police pursuit in Steuben County.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says someone called 911 at about 12 noon of a theft in progress.
The caller reported that someone driving a pick-up truck had possibly stolen a generator from a neighbor’s property in the area of County Roads 200 East and 100 North.
The witness followed the vehicle until deputies found the witness and suspect vehicle in the area of the Fremont industrial park.
A short pursuit took place after officers tried to stop the vehicle. It ended in a nearby wooded area where the suspect identified as 25-year-old Jesse Powell was found after he crashed into several trees.
Powell was placed into custody and flown by the Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne for medical treatment.
A generator which was found at the scene was determined by deputies to be stolen. It was identified and returned to the proper owner.
Police from Fremont and Angola along with Fremont Fire Rescue and Steuben County EMS assisted the Sheriff’s Department.
