COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater boys varsity basketball team used a 19-13 fourth quarter to defeat the Battle Creek Lakeview Spartans 63-58 in their season opening game.
Our McDonald’s Player of the Game was Coldwater center Gage McGuire, who led the team with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Colin Warner had 16 points and six rebounds while Dylan Targgart had 10 points and six rebounds while Brady Beckhusen had nine points and seven rebounds.

Luis DePaz led the Vikings with 20 points while Courtney Salesman had 11 points and 10 rebounds as Bronson dropped their season opening game.

Elijah Harris led the Chargers with 25 points, five rebounds and six steals. Grady Keber added 10 points while Devon Watson had eight points as Union City opened the season with a home court win.

—GIRLS BASKETBALL—
The young Coldwater Cardinals earned a hard fought 56-54 victory over a senior laden Battle Creek Lakeview Spartan team in a game that featured four lead changes in the final 40 seconds. Malorie Rzepka and Samantha Rodesiler combined to score the last seven points, all off assists from freshman Carlee Crabtree to help Coldwater get off to an early 2-0 start on the season.
Crabtree and Rzepka both had 14 points while Tyler Scheid had her second straight double/double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jamie Wellet had 10 points and four steals.
In the JV action, Lakeview topped the Lady Cards 47-15. Kelsi Herlan led with 9 points followed by Valy Yaldo with 3 points and 4 rebounds. Jayda Kelly was strong inside leading the team with 9 rebounds while Bailey Burkhardt chipped in 4 steals.
The Coldwater freshman won in overtime 41-39 over Lakeview. Taylor Wilber had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 1 assist. Jasmine Coppess finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Merna Yaldo had 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist, while Kaity Meyers had 5 points and 4 rebounds.
