STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – For the second time in less than a week, a home in Sturgis was destroyed by a fire on Thursday morning. Unlike last Saturday when the owner of a home was injured in a blaze on Surprise Street, the Thursday morning fire in the 100 block of South Lakeview near U.S. 12 took place in an unoccupied home.
The Sturgis Fire Department says the blaze was reported just before 6:00 a.m. There was heavy fire from the back of the house when they arrived. The fire also extended from the basement to the second floor.
The Sturgis ladder truck had to be used to put out the fire in the attic.
The Tri-Township Fire Department was called in for mutual aid. No injuries were reported.
Lifecare ambulance provided medical stand by and the Sturgis Police Department assisted firefighters with water supply and traffic control.
A portion of U.S. 12 had to be shut down while crews tried to put out the blaze. Authorities will be returning to the scene later this week to determine the cause of the fire. Firefighters cleared the scene at around 10:45am.
