COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Police plan to turn in a report to the Branch County Prosecutors Office about Thursday’s events after a man apparently shot his dog to death and broke into his neighbor’s apartment.
Coldwater Police as well as the Branch County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police set up a perimeter and attempted to call the man out of the apartment in the 700 block of West Chicago. Officers went inside after the man did not respond.
Police found him in a bedroom. He was alive but unresponsive with no obvious signs of injury. Medics were summoned and they took him to the Community Health Center of Branch County for treatment.
According to a news release, Coldwater Police say they got information the unidentified man had been acting erratically over two days and went to his apartment to check on his well-being.
Police found a broken window in the man’s apartment and a dog that had been shot dead in the living room. Further investigation led police to believe the man had broken into his neighbor’s apartment.
There were no human injuries and Coldwater’s Director of Public Safety Mark Bartell said the situation was resolved thanks to teamwork by all involved. He added officers were able to place the man in custody without harm.
The Coldwater Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
There was some social media chatter that Thursday’s incident was connected to an assault complaint in the 100 block of West Chicago but Coldwater Police say that was not the case.
