COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater man was apprehended Thursday evening after apparently shooting his dog and breaking in to his neighbor’s apartment.
Police report that they received information the man had been acting erratically the last two days, so they responded to his apartment to check on his well-being. Upon arrival they found a broken window in the man’s apartment and a dog that had been shot in the living room. Further investigation lead police to believe the man had broken into his neighbor’s apartment.
Mark Bartell, Coldwater’s Director of Public Safety said, “we were able to resolve this situation without injury because we had great teamwork by all involved.” Bartell said, “the officers worked together to keep each other safe, and they were able to place the man in custody without harm.” Bartell also noted that the Coldwater Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance also assisted at the scene. The Michigan State Police and Branch County Sheriff’s Office responded to back up CPD units.
According to police, officers organized a perimeter and attempted to call the man out of the apartment. He did not respond and eventually officers entered the apartment to search for him. Police said they found the man in a bedroom. He was reportedly alive, but unresponsive when located with no obvious signs of injury.
Medics were summoned to the scene and transported the man to the Community Health Center for treatment.
