COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – At the request of his defense lawyer, a Coldwater man will undergo a psychiatric examination after he was accused of getting into a confrontation with three Coldwater Police officers on December 27.
22-year-old Steven Mertz is facing six charges following the alleged incident in the 100 block of West Chicago.
Mertz was said to have been acting erratically that night and calls were made to police from a nearby gas station about his behavior.
The request for the exam was made on Thursday in Branch County District Court.
One officer suffered abrasions to his hand during a scuffle with Mertz.
Besides three counts of resisting, assaulting or obstructing police officers, Mertz is also facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon, being in possession of marijuana and calling 911 for unauthorized purposes.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for March 9 in Branch County District Court.
