THREE RIVERS, MI (WTVB) -In high school wrestling Saturday, Coldwater finished 2nd at the Three Rivers Super Duals. They were 4-1 on the day defeating Lawton 49-17, Williamston 62-14, Constantine 49-25 and Hart 38-31. They lost to Decatur 37-33.
Going undefeated we’re Faheem Abdullah at 125, Daniel Pino at 130, Sam DeMeester at 189 and Zach Gipple at 215. Meanwhile, Griffen Olmstead went 4-1 at 160 pounds.
The Cardinals are currently 18-3 and wrestle next on Wednesday at Jackson Northwest.
Bronson finished second at the Goshen Invitational. Goshen finished first with 214 points followed by the Vikings with 211 points. Championships were won by Ruger Rainey at 145, Gavin Alger at 160, David Erwin at 171, Cole Houtz at 182 and Chase Gibson at 195. Ben Modert finished second at 106.
—BOYS SWIMMING—
The Cardinal Boys Swim and Dive team had an all day invitational on Saturday at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. It was a prelim/finals meet where all the swimmers swim in the morning and then the top 12 in each event move on to swim in the finals in the afternoon.
Austin Butler, Carter Moore, Paul Bonham, and Tanner Bowers made it into the finals. Butler finished eighth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the one meter diving. Moore was ninth in the 200 freestyle. Bonham was 10th in the 50 freestyle. The relay team of Moore, Bowers, Bonham, and Butler also made the finals in the 200 freestyle relay and finished sixth.
Moore broke the 200 freestyle record in the prelims and then broke it again in the afternoon. He also broke the record in the 100 backstroke. Butler broke his own record in the 50 freestyle. He also broke the one meter diving record for 11 dives. The relay team of Bonham, Josh Rowlson, Moore and Butler broke their own record in the 200 medley relay. Moore, Bowers, Bonham, and Butler broke their own record in the 200 freestyle twice, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
The Coldwater boys have their next meet on Tuesday at the Sturgis relays.
—GIRLS GYMNASTICS—
Coldwater finished 10th out of the 15 teams at the Lowell Invitational on Saturday as they collected a third straight regional qualifying score of 124.75. The Cardinals only need one more team qualifying score of over 120 points to earn their way to the state tournament.
Claire Sheppard led the Cardinals on the vault with a 8.45 and in floor exercise with a 8.725. Abby Covert and Kelani Phillipp tied on the vault with 7.9 scores. Sarah Hughes had a 7.15 score on the uneven bars while Brooke Neitzert had a 9.15 on the balance beam and finished third overall in the meet. She led the Cardinals in all around with a personal best total of 32.55.
Coldwater will take part in the Holt Invitational on Saturday.
