STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – In high school boys varsity basketball, the Cardiac Cards ran out of miracles on Tuesday night.Coldwater’s Dylan Targgart’s three quarter court desperation shot drew iron at the buzzer as the Sturgis Trojans snapped the Coldwater Cardinals eight game winning streak with a 52-50 win on their home court.
Tuesday’s game was a preview of the upcoming districts as the Cardinals and Trojans will face each other in the opening round. Targgart was the McDonald’s Player of the Game with 17 points and nine rebounds including six on the offensive boards. Gage McGuire added 14 points and six rebounds.
Matt Polzin led Sturgis with 14 points.
Coldwater is now 10-2 while Sturgis is 11-2.
Coldwater won the J.V. game 38-30.
Also Tuesday night, Olivet topped Bronson 77-26. The Vikings dropped to 4-9.
Athens beat Union City 45-29, as the Chargers drop to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the Big 8.
Quincy improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big 8 after a 66-54 victory over Homer. Nathan Karney led the Orioles with 22 points and eight rebounds. William Dunn had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Drew Deaton also had 12 points.

The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Coldwater stretched their lead to 41-11 midway through the third in route to improving their record to 10-3 overall. Malorie Rzepka lead the Cardinals with 13 points. Carlee Crabtree scored nine points while adding five assists and four steals. Tyler Scheid and Samantha Rodesiler each had six points and six rebounds.
Coldwater swept the underclassman games. The Cardinals won the J.V. game 47-29 as Autumn Sunderland had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Coldwater also won the freshman contest 44-29 as Taylor Wilber led the Cardinals with 17 points.
