ANGOLA, MI (WTVB) – A 40 year sentence was handed down in Steuben County Circuit Court on Tuesday for a man who stabbed his fiance’s brother to death last April in Angola.
32-year-old Edwin Garcia was originally charged with murder and attempted murder but entered guilty pleas to lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and attempted voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.
Both counts are level 2 felony charges in Indiana.
Garcia was given consecutive 20 year sentences on the counts he admitted his guilt to. The two original charges were dismissed by Steuben County prosecutors.
In a tragic bit of irony, Garcia was sentenced on Valentine’s Day for the stabbing in the area of Washington and Broad Streets that left his 30-year-old fiance Amber Abuja seriously injured and her 30-year-old brother Michael Abuja dead.
Police found Garcia hiding inside a nearby abandoned house.
