COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was Senior Night at Coldwater High School, but the Cardinals were swept out of their gym by the visiting Harper Creek Beavers. The girls basketball opener went into overtime before the Beavers edged the Lady Cards 58-56. They did it by outscoring Coldwater in the extra period 6-4. On her birthday, Carlee Crabtree had a team-high 17 points, along with 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals, on her way to being named McDonald’s Player of the Game. Olivia had 9 points and Malorie Rzepka 8 as the Cardinals fall to fourth place in the Interstate 8 at 7-5, 13-5 overall.
In the boys basketball nightcap, Coldwater dropped its third straight game, losing to the Beavers 78-60. Harper led 19-18 after the first quarter, then blew the game open by outscoring the Cardinals 25-11 in the second. Gage McGuire led Coldwater with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Nick Aker, got the Senior Night start and responded with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Cole Targgart added 11 as the Cardinals drop to 3rd place in the Interstate 8 at 8-4, 12-5 overall.
In other boys basketball action, Quincy picked up a big 62-44 home win against Concord to propel the Orioles to a first place tie atop the Big 8 with the Yellow Jackets at 10-1. William Dunn had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Nathan Karney added 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals as the Orioles improve to 13-4 overall.
Union City won at Springport 39-36 to improve to 3-8 in the Big 8, 6-11 overall.
Bronson lost at Centreville 61-50 despite 12 points and 7 rebounds from Wyatt Heal and 7 points from Luis DePaz. The Vikings drop to 3-6 in the BCS Blue, 5-12 overall.
Tekonsha defeated arch-rival Litchfield on the road 69-58. Connor Jenkins had a game-high 19 points, while Calvin Blue had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Anthony Layne scored 16 as the Indians improve to 5-7 in the SCAA, 7-10 overall.
