MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson Vikings have advanced to the MHSAA Division Four Team Wrestling semifinals after they defeated Springport 35-31 at Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena on Friday afternoon.
Jacob Butters, Rugger Ranney and Gavin Alger scored early decisions to put Bronson ahead 9-4. A win for Cole Houtz on a forfeit and a David Erwin major decision gave the Vikings a 19-4 lead.
Springport then got a pin and a decision to cut the lead down to 19-13 but Bronson’s lighter weight classes took control after that. Ben Modert scored a major decision and that was followed by back-to-back pins by Brendan Withington and Eion DePaz which clinched the match for the Vikings.
The 31-8 Vikings will face top-seeded Hudson in the semifinals Saturday morning. The 17-9 Tigers advanced with a 79-0 thrashing of Munising. The state finals will be Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm.
