COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Boys’ basketball, the Coldwater Cardinals used an 18-4 second quarter to break open Friday night’s game and they went on to defeat Hastings 60-34 in the Interstate 8 finale. The Cardinals are now 14-5 overall and they finished third in the conference with a record of 11-3. McDonald’s Player of the Game Gage McGuire led Coldwater with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Cole Targgart added 10 points.
The Quincy Orioles remained in a first place tie in the Big 8 as they won at Jonesville 60-50. The Orioles managed to hit clutch foul shots in the final quarter. They made 12 of 15 from the charity stripe for the quarter and 20 of 28 for the night. That total included point guard Nathan Karney hitting all 11 of his foul shots. Karney led the Orioles with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. William Dunn had 17 points and nine rebounds while Drew Deaton had 13 points and six rebounds. The Orioles are 14-4 overall and 11-1 in the Big 8.
Bronson dropped their contest with Cassopoils, losing 68-55. Wyatt Heal had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings who are now 5-14.
Union City defeated Reading by a score of 52-34. Elijah Harris led the Chargers with 19 points. Union City is now 7-11 overall and 4-8 in the Big 8.
Tekonsha lost to Burr Oak by a score of 64-46. Connor Jenkins had 15 points and nine rebounds while Anthony Layne had 10 points. Tekonsha’s record drops to 8-11.

Last night in Girls’ Basketball, the Coldwater Lady Cardinals closed out their regular season with a 41-30 victory over Hastings to improve their record to 15-5 overall and 9-5 in conference play to finish in third place. Coldwater only led by six going into halftime but opened up an 11 point league going into,the final quarter. McDonald’s Player of the Game Carlee Crabtree led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Scheid just missed a double/ double with nine points and 10 boards. Emilee Smoker added eight rebounds and two assists. Coldwater travels to Loy Norrix on Monday to face Battle Creek Central in their district opener at 6:00 p.m..

In bowling, both of the Coldwater teams and the Bronson boys squad qualified for the State Finals on Friday during their regional tournaments.
Coldwater captured the MHSAA Division 2 Boys Bowling Team Regional title at Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo with a score of 4,191. That was good enough for a 72 pin victory over Byron Center.
The Coldwater girls were third at the team regionals with a score of 3,638 which was 152 pins back of first place Charlotte.
Both of the Coldwater teams will compete next Friday at the Division 2 Team Finals at Super Bowl in Canton.
The Bronson boys were second at the MHSAA Division 4 Boys Bowling Team Regional at Pinz, Kalamazoo. The Vikings were 271 pins back of first place Vandercook Lake. The Vikings advance to next Friday’s Division 4 Team Finals at Royal Scot in Lansing.
