TEKONSHA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater man was scheduled to be arraigned in Calhoun County District Court Thursday afternoon after his actions Wednesday apparently led to a precautionary lockdown of the Hillsdale College campus.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that they were dispatched to the 17000 block of T Drive South in Tekonsha Township at about 11:30 a.m. in regards to a burglary investigation and possible suicidal subject.
There were allegations that a 9 millimeter semi-auto handgun was stolen and that the suspect may also be suicidal.
An area broadcast was initiated for 28-year-old Michael Philip LaFountain who was driving a 2005 gold colored Ford Ranger.
LaFountain used to be a student at Hillsdale College.
Officials at Hillsdale College say the lockdown took place after they received information from a credible third-party in regards to a potential threat from a former student.
Numerous police agencies were involved in a search for LaFountain. He was stopped and taken into custody by Coldwater Police on Bishop Avenue near Grand.
Assistance was also provided by the Branch County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police.
The Sheriff’s Department says they firearm has not been located and a mental health petition for the suspect is being pursued by family members. LaFountain was taken to the Calhoun County Jail after he was booked on a hold from that county at the Branch County Jail.
