ATHENS, MI (WTVB) – A 64-year-old Athens woman had to be temporarily evacuated from her home on Thursday after Calhoun County deputies and animal control officials removed 113 cats from the residence who were in various conditions of health and sanitation.
The felines were taken to the Battle Creek Animal Shelter for housing. Veterinarians were in the process on Thursday of assessing the health of the cats.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says the homeowner was cooperative during the investigation which is continuing. She could face criminal charges once the investigation is done.
The Athens Township Fire Department had to be called in to conduct an air quality test due to the high levels of ammonia.
It was determined that much of the oxygen had been replaced with methane and ammonia. The home had to be ventilated overnight but it was later declared habitable.
