COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater fire officials say careless use of smoking materials was the cause of a fire which broke out Sunday afternoon in a home at 113 East Washington near Jefferson.
The fire was reported at about 4:25 p.m. It only took several minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control.
Coldwater Fire Chief Rich Sherman says there was heavy fire damage to one room along with significant heat and smoke damage throughout the structure owned and occupied by Deetta Sweney.
No injuries were reported. Several pets were rescued and revived on scene.
Sherman says fire was showing from two downstairs windows and there was heavy smoke in the two story home when crews arrived.
Firefighters managed to keep the fire to the room where it broke out and to a small area in the attic above the room.
Coldwater firefighters were assisted by Coldwater Police and LIfe Care Ambulance crews. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department Victim Services team was also called in.
Crews cleared the scene at about 6:15 p.m.
