COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – One of the two suspects in the robbery of the Century Bank and Trust branch in Quincy back in March 2016 was sentenced Monday in Branch County Circuit Court, after he entered into a plea agreement with Branch County prosecutors.
33-year-old John Thomas Morgan entered a no contest plea to a charge of bank robbery. Judge Bill O’Grady ordered Morgan to serve between six and 25 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections which was the sentence both sides agreed to and recommended.
In exchange for the plea, six other charges as well as a sentence enhancement were dropped.
Prosecutor Scott Smith pointed out during a plea hearing last month there was no weapon displayed during the robbery. In addition, Smith said there was no violence, no threats and no police chase. He called the plea agreement an “appropriate resolution.” It was mentioned during the hearing that Morgan demanded and got money from the tellers during the robbery.
He was ordered to pay over $5,700 in restitution. Morgan was also given credit for 413 days already served.
Co-defendant Nickole Collins also entered no contest pleas last month to charges of unarmed robbery and larceny from a person. Unarmed robbery has a maximum sentence of 15 years while larceny from a person carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. All other charges and an habitual offender enhancement will be dismissed in exchange of the pleas. Collins is scheduled to be sentenced June 5, 2017.
