COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A longtime downtown Coldwater business is celebrating its 100th anniversay this week.
Wes Wilbur opened Wilbur’s Upholstering and Furniture Store in 1917 on North Monroe Street, less than 1/2 block north of their current location. As the business prospered, Wilbur bought the building at 6 South Monroe Street and moved there in 1936. It was one of the few buildings in Coldwater with an electric elevator, and still has the only elevator remaining that was built by Coldwater Machine Works.
In 1963, a building to the south was purchased to double the size of the business. After the Urban Renewal Project in the late 1960’s removed the Juhl Drug Store and Model Finance buildings at the corner of Monroe and Chicago Streets, the land was purchased and Wibur’s Furniture expanded again.
In preparation for their 100th Anniversary Sale, Wilbur’s will be closed Wednesday, June 7, with the sale starting Thursday, June 8. Among the prizes to be given away during the sale are a $1,100 Beautyrest Queen Size Pillowtop Mattress Set and a $500 Wilbur’s Shopping Spree.
