COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – State Senator Mike Shirkey’s “Coffee Hour” lasted for almost 90 minutes Friday morning in Coldwater, as a large number of people packed their way into the Blue Hat Coffee Gallery.
They asked and offered opinions on a number of issues, including hot button ones like the medical marijuana controversy in Coldwater Township.
One audience member said the state was promoting medical marijuana use and that it was a federally illegal drug. A couple of other audience members disagreed with that statement with one saying “it should not be illegal”.
Shirkey said the 2008 medical marijuana ballot issue that was passed by 63 percent of Michigan voters was not well written and that the laws passed last year were designed to provide as much structure and local control as possible. He said he would be talking with Coldwater Township Supervisor Don Rogers and Shirkey told the audience, “if you don’t want it, work with your local officials.”
Other issues brought up by those in attendance included recycling, the availability of career and technical education for students, the vote in the legislature Thursday on reforming the teacher retirement system, and Enbridge’s Line Five under the Straits of Mackinac.
