COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Work continues on the construction of the new animal shelter for Branch County. The shelter is being built next to the Branch County Jail, and now expected to be operational in late August or September.
The building will serve both Branch and Hillsdale Counties. Part of a ten year deal between the two counties calls for Hillsdale County to pay $30,000 a year for the first three years. That money will be used for the capitalization of the project.
Interior construction work is underway right now.
Plans call for the shelter to house 20 kennels. Sheriff John Pollack says the adjacency to the jail will allow jail trustees to keep the shelter cleaned, under the supervision of corrections officers.
A fire in May 2015 forced the closing of the Animal Control Shelter south of Quincy.
