KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – The extended family of WMU’s legendary “Black Ghost” returned to campus on Friday, 100 years after he played football in a world that was much more racially polarized than the one we live in. Sam Dunlap was a stand-out high school athlete from Benton Harbor who came to Kalamazoo and lettered in three sports, breaking WMU records that would stand for decades, and all the while dealing with the racism of his day. His family had lunch with University and Athletic Department Officials, Visited the Zhang Archive to view Dunlap’s original uniform, helmet and shoulder pads and toured athletic facilities and his display at the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame.
