BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater finished second in the Gold Bracket of the Cereal City Classic Tournament on Saturday at Harper Creek.
During pool play the Cardinals defeated Renaissance and Hopkins 2-0 and defeated St. John’s in their crossover match 2-1. That put Coldwater in first place out of their pool and straight into the Gold Bracket being seeded 3rd out of 22 teams. Matched up in the Quarter-Finals against St. John’s Coldwater again came out on top 2-0.
In the Semi-Finals the Lady Cards played a strong Lakeview team and ended up winning in 3 games: 25-17, 18-25, 15-10. They then lost to the ninth ranked team in Class A Bedford 2-0 by scores of 17-25, 21-25.
Coldwater’s record is now 12-2-2

*Jasmine Wellet led in digs with 61, tied in most blocks with Tyler Scheid with 10 each, and had 32 kills.
*Tyler Scheid also had 31 kills and hit a 0.333
*Drue Mullin had 60 digs
*Olivia Foley led in assists with 53
*Ellory Farmer contributed 40 assists
*Jamie Wellet had 40 assists, 42 digs and 16 kills
*Malorie Rzepka led in kills with 34.
The Lady Cardinals play again at home Wednesday for a tri-match with Parchment and Adrian beginning at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday will be Youth Night and Parent’s Night. Athletes who came to the Coldwater volleyball camp and wear their camp t-shirt will get in free to the matches along with their parents.
Union City got to the finals of the Bronze bracket of the Cereal City Classic Saturday in Battle Creek before losing to Brooklyn Columbia Central 2-1. The Chargers defeated Athens 2-0 and East Lansing 2-1 to advance to the finals after they went 0-6 in pool play. The Chargers have their first home match of the season on Tuesday against Climax-Scotts and Colon.
Bronson went 6-0 and won the Western Michigan Christian Invitational Saturday. The second-ranked Vikings did not drop a game. They dominated Ravenna in the finals 25-10, 25-10. The Vikings advanced to the finals with a 25-12, 25-22 victory over Covenant Christian. Bronson won all four of their matches in pool play by 2-0 scores.
Coldwater’s freshman squad finished second at the Interstate 8 Invitational in Marshall Saturday. They first in their pool before losing to Marshall in the finals. Victoria Gonzalez had 25 aces, 13 assists and 17 digs and three kills. Madison Beckhusen had 11 aces, 21 digs, nine kills and six blocks. Amber Sutherland had 10 aces, eight digs and three kills. Jenna Julian had ten aces, seven blocks and 11 kills. Meg Smith had five aces, nine digs and 17 assists.
Coldwater’s freshman record is now 13-2-2.
