UNDATED (WTVB) – Homecoming games were hosted by Coldwater, Bronson, and Union City Friday night, and in all three cases, the visiting team spoiled the fun.
Coldwater fell to longtime nemesis Lumen Christi 33-14 at Cardinal Field. Even though the Cards had 336 yards of total offense compared to Lumen’s 358, the host team struggled in the red zone and were burned by the big play ability of Titan running back Sebastian Toland, who had 18 carries for 212 yards and touchdown runs of 78 and 29 yards, Quarterback Troy Kutcha was 4-for-7 passing for 92 yards and 2 TDs. Kyle Minder had 8 carries for 45 yards and the other Titan score while also leading the defense with 13 tackles.
For Coldwater, our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Logan Fee, had 22 carries for 112 yards and both Coldwater scores, while Damon Beckhusen had 11 carries for 81 yards. Cole Targgart was 8-for-16 passing for 84 yards and an interception. Brady Beckhusen had 6 receptions for 74 yards.
Nathan Spray led the defense with 8 tackles as the Cardinals fall into a tie for third with Parma Western in the Interstate 8 standings. Both teams are 3-2 in the league, 4-2 overall.
In other Homecoming games around Branch County, Bronson fell to Jonesville 52-8 at Charles Hilton Field. The Vikings drop to 0-5 in the Big 8, 0-6 overall. And in a battle for the top of the Big 8 standings, Reading handed Union City its first loss of the season with a 36-12 win at Alumni Field. The Rangers are now 5-0 in the Big 8, while the Chargers are 4-1; both teams are 5-1 overall.
Quincy broke its 2-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 38-32 win at Homer. The Orioles had the final two scores of the game to pull away from the Trojans in a back-and-forth affair. Caleb McCavitt was 16-for-30 passing for 230 yards, 4 touchdowns, and an interception. William Dunn had 4 receptions for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns; the other two touchdown passes were to Jon Purvis and Ryan Gibson.
Gibson also had 15 carries for 39 yards and a rushing TD, and Bryce Ruhl had 10 carries for 55 yards and a score. Evan Henning had a team-high 7 tackles as Quincy improves to 3-2 in the Big 8, 4-2 overall.
