COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Planning and Zoning Administrator Dean Walrack and the staff of the city’s Neighborhood Services Department sought input from the city Planning Commission Monday night on how the term “structure” can be interpreted when it comes to large flagpoles.
This came about after the city got questions from a Texas flag company about the possibility of putting in a 130 foot tall flagpole with a 40 by 80 foot flag that would be on a large lot and require a 13 foot deep substructure encased in concrete.
The name of the business involved was not revealed in Walrack’s report, but there was some discussion it would be Camping World, which is taking over the former Gander Mountain store in the Willowbrook Plaza.
Walrack said they were looking for guidance in the interpretation of the ordinance since it does not address flagpoles of this character.
He noted there were already two non-conforming flag poles on East Chicago Street in Coldwater that are higher than the 45 feet allowed by ordinance.
Planning Commission member Dave Rumsey told Walrack that if he thought he needed an ordinance on flag poles, he should bring if forward to the Commission.
No action was taken by the Planning Commission following a nearly half hour discussion.
