BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Harper Creek ended a four game losing streak to the Coldwater Cardinals and took another step to the Interstate 8 championship as they defeated the Cardinals 17-7 on Friday night.
Big plays once again did the Cardinals in. Harper Creek’s Ivan Johnson returned the opening kickoff 95 yards but the Cardinals tied the game with 53 seconds left in the first half on a Damon Beckhusen one yard touchdown. The Beavers took the lead for good on a Jackson Malone 24 yard touchdown pass to Jalonty Hervey with one second left in the half. A Harper Creek 27 yard field goal with one second left in the game was icing on the cake for the undefeated Beavers.
Coldwater had the ball for over 28 minutes and a 238-223 edge in total yards. Of the 121 total plays in the football game, the two teams combined for only 17 passes.
Beckhusen was our McDonald’s Player of the Game as he led Coldwater in rushing with 155 yards. Nathan Spray had five tackles on the Cardinal defense. Coldwater drops to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the Interstate 8.

In the Big 8….
After winning their first five contests of the season, Union City has dropped back-to-back games. The Chargers lost at Homer 38-24 on Friday and remain one victory shy of qualifying for the post-season. Just like last week against Reading, the Chargers had turnover issues against the Trojans as they coughed the ball up four times. Austin Mosher rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. Josh Watson passed for 114 yards and a TD. Larson Kever had five receptions for 88 yards and a TD. The Chargers drop to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big 8.
It was a happy homecoming for Quincy as they defeated Concord 34-14 and moved to within one victory and getting in the State playoffs. The Orioles are now 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big 8. Ryan Gibson had a big night for the Orioles as he rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Caleb McCavit rushed for a touchdown and passed for another. Bryce Ruhl rushed for 68 yards and a TD. Adam Santi led the Quincy defense with nine tackles.
The Reading Rangers wrapped up the Big 8 Conference title with a 47-8 victory over Bronson. The Rangers are 6-0 in the conference and they enjoy a two game lead with one conference game left. Bronson drops to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the Big 8.
