COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department announced on Friday afternoon that due to the female population being overcrowded at the Branch County Jail, 10 female inmates have been transported to the Lenawee County Jail.
Undersheriff Keith Eichler says all of the inmates transported are non-violent offenders and have all been sentenced.
Eichler says Lenawee County is now housing 13 female inmates for Branch County.Sheriff John Pollack told the Branch County Township Supervisors Association on Monday night that the jail count included 22 females last Friday.
He added of the 13 women arrested last weekend, only four were able to bond out. The jail count earlier this week was 141 prisoners which included 25 females.
Pollack expressed his fears to township supervisors that the county will eventually be sued over the jail.
The jail population as of early Saturday morning was 128 prisoners which included 111 men and 17 women.
