COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – November is Diabetes Awareness Month in Michigan and Tuesday’s World Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Day was commemorated in Coldwater.
Margaret Weigle is a registered dietitian at the Community Health Center of Branch County and says diabetes prevention steps include weight loss if needed, meal plans, healthy eating habits and exercise on a regular basis with a physician’s approval. According to Weigle, pre-diabetic and diabetic people have the most difficult time with self-management of their eating and exercise habits. She says for most of us, our lives revolve around food and relaxing and that requires a measure of discipline.
Weigle suggests we learn about food portion control, enjoying healthy meals, and developing interests other than watching TV and playing with electronics as a way to help with our exercise plans.
Wednesday Weigle will be at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 27 East Chicago Street in Coldwater for a diabetes education session beginning at 6:00 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Lion’s Club. Terri Ann Huffman of Coldwater is looking to organize a Lion’s Club in Coldwater with an emphasis on service projects focusing on diabetes.
