COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – She was known by many as “The Grand Lady of Tibbits” or “Miss Republican Party” for Branch County.
Mary Smith of Coldwater passed away over the weekend at the age of 102.
Arrangements are being handled by the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.
Smith was involved in a number of community projects over the years, including the restoration of the Tibbits Opera House.
She served as co-chair of the restoration campaign for 10 years and donated a substantial amount of money to help construct a handicap accessible restroom at the theatre.
Smith was also named Branch County Republican of the Year in 1985, serving on many state and local committees.
Seventh District Congressman Tim Walberg read a special tribute to her on the U.S. House floor in March of 2016.
She turned 102 June 23, 2017.
