LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Governor Rick Snyder is approving legislation that will let people with felony convictions apply for jobs at the Michigan Department of Corrections. Snyder says the effort is part of reforming the criminal justice system in Michigan by ensuring successful reentry into society.
The Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater is one of the largest employers in Branch County.
The Michigan Department of Corrections will develop a policy to make sure those hired will not be a risk to public safety. The law was part of Snyder’s vision for criminal justice expressed as a priority in a special message in 2015.
Public Act 191 of 2017 was signed into law Thursday by the Governor.
