COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In a match up of a two state-ranked teams, Jackson Northwest took a big step toward winning the Interstate 8 title with a 47-37 overtime victory over Coldwater Saturday at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
Northwest held the lead throughout most of the game but Coldwater used a 9-3 fourth quarter to force overtime. Northwest pulled away in the extra session thanks to 11 of 15 shooting from the foul line. Northwest used a 20-5 edge at the foul line to defeat the Cardinals for the second time this season in overtime.
McDonald’s Player of the Game Malorie Rzepka led the Cardinals with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Tyler Scheid had eight points and eight rebounds. Sydney Shafer scored a game-high 18 points for Northwest as the Mounties took over sole possession of first place in the Interstate 8 with a 11-1 record. They are 17-1 overall.
Coldwater drops to 16-2 overall and 10-2 in the Interstate 8.

In the MHSAA Competitive Cheer Districts, none of the Branch County teams advanced to the regionals. The top four teams in each district advance. Coldwater competed at the Division Two Districts at Mattawan while Bronson and Union City were at the Division Four Districts at Lawton.
