HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – Last night in high school boys’ basketball, the Coldwater Cardinals nailed down their first Interstate 8 championship in nine years on Friday night at Hastings but it was not easy. The Cardinals had to rally from a six point deficit in the final quarter to force overtime and then outscored the Saxons 10-3 in the extra session to win 61-54. Coldwater finished one game ahead of Parma Western in the final conference standings. The Cardinals trailed by as much as 12 points. Dylan Targgart led the Cardinals with 20 points and 14 rebounds while Gage McGuire had 16 points. Coldwater had a big edge at the foul line making 24 out of 35 attempts. The Saxons were eight of ten. Coldwater finishes conference play at 12-2. They are 16-3 overall and wrap up the regular season next Thursday at home against Portage Central.

Quincy used a 29-13 fourth quarter to win the showdown for first place in the Big 8 conference., beating the Homer Trojans 81-67. Will Dunn led Quincy with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Quincy moves a half game ahead of the Trojans. Homer has two games left in the conference while the Orioles have one game left.

Union City 61, Springport 45 – Grady Kever led four Chargers in double figures with 14 points.

In girls’ basketball, Coldwater defeated Hastings 40-28 to wrap up an 18-2 regular season and finished with a second place 12-2 conference record. This was the most regular season wins since the 1992-93 team compiled a 19-1 record. Tyler Scheid led the way with 17 points and six rebounds. Jamie Wellet finished with four points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Coldwater will travel to Sturgis on Monday to face the 9-11 Trojans at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Class A districts. The balance of the district tournament will be held at Battle Creek Lakeview.

—MHSAA GIRLS BOWLING REGIONALS—
The Coldwater High School girls varsity bowling team Friday won their Division 2 Regional hosted by Vicksburg at Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo. Individual scores were not available.
The State Finals will be held at Super Bowl in Canton, Michigan on March 2nd and 3rd.
