DETROIT (WTVB) – Four wrestlers from Branch County are still alive at the completion of the first day of competition at the MHSAA Individual Finals at Ford Field. Two Bronson wrestlers, Ben Modert and Chase Gibson, will go for state championships in their respective weight classes this afternoon. Modert, who had a major decision, techncal fall, and decision to advance, will face Clinton’s AJ Baxter in the Division 4 103 lb. title match, while Gibson, who had three straight pins on the day, will take on Beaverton’s Eric Cassiday in the Division 4 215 lb. title match. Union City’s Colton Johns, who lost his Division 4 171 lb. semifinal match to Mendon’s Wyatt Cool by a 14-4 major decision, is still alive in the consolation bracket, as is Coldwater’s Nick Buchanan at Division 2 119 lb.
In today’s other high school sports action, Coldwater’s gymnastics team is at Kenowa Hills High School in Grand Rapids for Regionals. And the 45th Annual Al Cline Coldwater Exchange Club Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament wraps up today with four games at Legg Middle School:
- 7th Place Game: Sturgis vs. Jackson, 2 PM
- 5th Place Game: Coldwater vs. Hillsdale, 3:45 PM
- 3rd Place Game: Loy Norrix vs. Lumen Christi, 5:30 PM
- 1st Place Game: Marshall vs. Schoolcraft, 7:15 PM
