QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Following a closed session Monday night, the Quincy Board of Education passed a resolution calling for the board to consider the non-renewal of David Spalding’s contract as high school principal. Further action could take place during the April board meeting.
Spalding has been on administrative leave since last May when questions were raised about how he and former Superintendent Craig Artist handled sexual misconduct allegations against former teacher and Information Technology Director Jason Ferrell.
Ferrell eventually entered no contest pleas to two counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct for an inappropriate relationship he had with a former female student. He was sentenced to serve between seven years, 11 months and 15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Spalding and Artist have been charged with misdemeanor failure to report child abuse. A Branch County District Court motion hearing in their cases has been scheduled for April 10, 2018 after Spalding’s attorney Bill Renner said during a pre trial conference last month that he was dealing with two conflicting police reports.
Scott Smith from the Branch County Prosecutors Office admitted during the hearing the cases are not resolvable.
