COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater High School’s Gage McGuire has been named as the Interstate 8 Boys Basketball Most Valuable Player for the 2017-2018 season. The junior guard got 69 out of a possible 70 votes to make the conference’s First Team.
McGuire averaged 17.7 points a game while shooting 45 percent from the floor and grabbing 7.3 rebounds a game. His highlight game was against Pennfield when he scored 30 points, which included five triples and two big time dunks.
Coldwater sophomore Dylan Targgart also made the First Team after he averaged 12.3 points and 9.4 rebounds this season. His two offensive rebounds and put backs against Hastings in overtime secured the league title for the Cardinals.
Earning Honorable Mention were Brady Beckhusen and Damon Beckhusen. Senior Brady Beckhusen averaged 8.8 points a game and shot 71 percent from the line. He was called the backbone of the Cardinal post defense which only allowed 44 points per game in the I-8.
Sophomore Damon Beckhusen was called the quarterback of the basketball team. He averaged 2.5 steals and 5.7 assists a game. His 16 points, five steals and six assists against Northwest on January 5th set the tone for the Cards second half league dominance.
Other First Team members were Steele Fortress and Desmond Price from Parma Western, Jeremy and Jack Luciani from Marshall, Dom Gibson from Harper Creek, Grant Peterson of Pennfield, Jackson Long of Hastings and Dayton Keller from Lumen Christi.
