LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A Michigan lawmaker is pushing to ensure that health inspections are occurring in the kitchens of the Coldwater’s Lakeland Correctional Facility and other Michigan Department of Corrections facilities.
St. Joseph State Senator John Proos is introducing a bill that would include a $50,000 budget plan to make all prison kitchens follow the public safety requirements of the state’s food law and food code.
In a news release posted on his web site, Proos says “As we looked closely at our prison food service operations, one of the items we discovered is that our prison kitchens are not inspected for food safety like other food establishments. Because prison kitchens are not licensed, they are not subject to safety inspections. To ensure that all prison food operations are safe, the Senate subcommittee’s budget plan will change that.”
Proos is the Chair of the Senate Department of Corrections budget subcommittee. The Senate will first review the bill.
