MASON, MI (WTVB) – In the MHSAA Track Regionals, Coldwater’s boys won another Division Two regional title on Friday at Mason while the Coldwater girls were second.
Coldwater easily won the boys meet with 124 points followed by Mason with 76 and Olivet with 63 ½. Coldwater regional champions were Shuaib Aljabaly (1600 and 3200), Adam Bailey (300 hurdles) and Dylan Targgart (shot put and discus). Three Cardinal relay teams won regional titles. Adam Bailey, Matt Gipple, Tyler Kooi and Mohamed Saleh won the 800 relay and set a new school record with a time of 1:31.84. The old record of 1:31.9 was set back in 1978 by the team of Ron Clark, Jeff Sickles, Tom Newman, and Leonard Smith. Aljabaly, Saleh, Kooi and Bailey teamed up to win the 1600 relay while Aljabaly, Saleh, Kyle Foulk and Ben Fagen won the 3200 relay. Bailey broke his own school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40 seconds flat. Also qualifying for the state finals were throwers Cole Targgart and Zach Gipple.
Harper Creek won the girls meet with 110 points followed by Coldwater with 79 and Mason with 76. Coldwater regional champions were Kathy Potter (1600) and Claire Sheppard (high jump). Kaci White was second in the shot put. The 400 and 3200 relay teams both finished second.
The Bronson girls were second while Union City finished sixth at the MHSAA Division 3 Track Regionals at Comstock. Berrien Springs edged Bronson by seven points to win the girls regional title, 114-107. Union City finished with 42 points. Winning regional championships for Bronson were Jenna Salek (400) and Keona Salesman (high jump). Salek was second in the 200 while Xochiti Garcia was third in the 1600 and second in the 3200. Salesman, Meghan Vaughn, Joanna Erwin and Salek were second in the 1600 relay. Salesman, Vaughn, Alanna Mayer and Garcia were second in the 3200 relay. Madelyn Thompson was second in the discus. Union City’s 1600 relay team of Camryn Thomet, Bracy Swift, Hope Austin and Lillian Bambacht won the regional title. Bambacht, Makayla Wright, Swift and Austin were third in the 400 and 800 relays. Swift was also second in the long jump.
In the boys meet, Union City was fourth while Bronson was 13th. Gavin Hooker of Union City won the regional championship in the 200. He was also second in the 100. Chad Bruce, Josh Watson, Austin Mosher and Hooker were second in the 400 relay and third in the 800 relay. Bronson’s Luis Ortiz was third in the 1600.
Baseball—
Quincy 6, Hudson 1 (Al Glick Tournament)
Quincy battled the elements and a tough Hudson team to win a first round game in the Jackson County Al Glick Baseball Tournament. The Orioles scored early and held on for a 6-1 victory. Winning pitcher Caleb McCavit and Braden Allman teamed on a four hitter as McCavit earned his fourth victory of the season. Allman paced the offense with 3 hits. The Orioles return to Hudson on Saturday to face Big 8 rival Reading in second round action.
Union City 16, Waldron 0; Union City 16, Waldron 1
Blade Gordon picked up his 100th career hit as Union City swept Waldron 16-0 and 16-1. The Chargers started fast in both games. They scored 10 runs in the first inning of the opener. They put 11 up on the board in the opening frame of the second game. Brendan Stuchell had three hits and three RBI’s in the opener. Colton Johns also drove in three runs. Connor Elgan was the winning pitcher in the first game. Elgan and Grady Kever both had three RBI’s in the nightcap. Stuchell was the winning pitcher in the second game as struck out eight in three innings of work. With the sweep, the Chargers are now 18-9.
Girls Soccer—
Quincy 3, Jonesville 2
Quincy won a big conference match on Friday as they defeated Jonesville 3-2. After Jonesville opened the scoring, Quincy’s Katie Rathbun tied the game after she got a long cross from Madison Hinds. Quincy took the lead five minutes into the second half with a header from Hinds off a corner kick. Rathbun put Quincy up 3-1 with a shot that hit the upper corner of the goal
Jonesville got one back but the Orioles hung on for the win. Quincy will look to clinch the conference title with a win Monday when we host Hillsdale.
